Come on alice what the hell are you doing ?
Like she always did when her mind was elsewhere, Alice ignored him. After all the only part of him she could see was his mouth. It was all she ever saw of him in the daylight. She never understood why and the only time she asked him he gave her such a nonsensical answer she never asked again. They’d met by chance and he had decided that he would accompany her on her journey. She’d tried to lose him once or twice but he always showed up. Sometimes he would disappear of his own accord, but when she needed him he always reappeared. She was grateful every time.
She walked further into the deep grass and only the top of her black hair could be seen. He floated above the waving sea of grass but said nothing further. He looked ahead and saw the mountains getting closer. They were dark against the clear blue sky and the tops were covered in snow. Clouds swirled about but where moved on by the wind. As she passed a bare tree, a bird lit upon the lowest branch. Alice looked at it and smiled. The bird nodded and asked what her destination was. Alice told the bird it already knew and why would it ask such a question when it was clearly not its business. The bird assured Alice that every thing that happened in the field was its business and if it weren’t for him, she would not be granted safe passage through this part of the world. Alice apologised for her own impudence. The bird accepted her apology and told her to be weary of strangers. She rolled her eyes. she was well aware of the ambiguous nature of the beings in this world. As she stood atop a small rise, she saw a figure in the distance. She recognised the slouch of his shoulders and the way he loped along.
What did I tell you?
She kept her eyes on the figure. She heard movement to her side and turned to see her companion in his full form. She looked him up and down as if confirming he was all there.
It’s good to see you in the sunlight again.
He said nothing, but shifted his gaze to what she was looking at.
You know it may not turn out the way you want it to Alice
I know.
She said it in such a low tone, he almost didn’t hear her.
They say that place changes you. And not always for the better.
He’ll be okay.
Just be prepared Alice.
She stayed put for as long as she thought she could before she broke and started towards him.
As the gap between them closed he seemed to hesitate and so did she. He shifted his weight and it was then she noticed. He reached across his body with his left arm to steady his pack on his right shoulder. She broke into a run. He stood where he was and waited for her to reach him. She threw her arms around him. Dropping his pack to the ground, he wrapped his arm around her waist and buried his head in her shoulder.
It is so good to be with you.
She smiled and brushed his hair off his brow.
Promise me
I can’t
Promise me
Please Alice you can’t ask that of me
I can and I am
Just take me home
You’re already home.
