After several months of gathering the guts to come to this forum, I've finally done it. I used to write a lot of poetry in college, and I still write lyrics now, but I miss being able to write things without worrying about melody and trying to fit the mood of a song.

I want to start my time here with something I wrote for my son a few months before his eighth birthday. I hope you all enjoy.

For Seven Year-Old Boys
For Jordan.

Oh, it should be simpler.
But you’re left solving
The long division problem
Of two dads.

If years were miles, we’re
Five down the road, and long
From the exit, where I get off
And you take the wheel.

I’m the iron fist in the velvet
Glove at the end of a strong
Arm wrapped around you,
Never wanting to let go
Even when the time is right.

From this old man whose never
Really understood his old men to you:
Watch your step, son, and remember
How my hand guided you when you have
Your own co-pilot and be gentler
Than I’ve been.

  • I meant to add to my post above that when I read this to my son, he didn't seem to care. (No edits in this forum? Talk about pressure to get it right the first time).

father/son relationships should be special.....my baby has a lovely relationship with his father......I hope your son brings you a lot of joy and makes you proud......I was my father's favourite (a gril), and my brother was my mother's favourite, but I'm beginning to see how close boys can get to their father's and vice versa with my son :)
....they're asking me to prove why I should be allowed to stay with my baby in Australia, because I'm mentally ill......and they think I should leave......

Yes, please do :). That was very powerful. And honest too. When your son grows up some he'll understand it and appreciate it. Now that you have gathered your guts you must share some more! :)

(And ISN, you make me laugh. I'm not agreeing with what you said about your posting but that was funny :). )
  • Thanks, I also posted a poem called "The Cutting of the Elm".
