Big, Old House

You have no idea
I'm finding this a common theme
How many times I walked home
or away from home
Sun rising
setting
Rain
Snow
coming down
Wind and cars
flying by
How many times
Past that big, old house on the corner
Where you now lay your head down
when it's dark
How many times
And how many lives ago
was that?

I remember bouncing by
Not even touching the sidewalk
After dropping you off
That one night
So long ago
When it seemed so right
Perfect.
And days that passed
Hoping
Beyond hoping
I'd see you again
But it somehow fell apart
Dissolved
Before it ever really began

And walking by that house
After you had left
Never once thinking when
you got back
that place
the yard on the corner
would be the scene of the crime

When Cinderella was returned at midnight
After a magical day
and night
yes, right there
It's incredulous
how this all spins around
and here I am
Pen on paper
dragging it out
along between the lines
just a little longer
adding
to the hope
that once existed
in my young mind
walking past that
house
every day
you now call home

I miss that walk

You have no idea
