Library Steps
4/15/06

I sat waiting
Quite impatiently
On library steps
For you
Hands nervously rolling an envelope with tickets and directions
Watching people go in and out
Just another day
For them
Finally you came out
(Deep breaths on both sides – it’s funny now looking back)
A slight rotation of the earth later
It was over
Hard to imagine
We had waited ten years at least

In the parking lot you said you felt like you were fourteen again and in love
For a second there I thought you were talking about me
You bought a bottled water and told me what the kids do in Istanbul to make money – refill empty bottles
You can tell when the cap doesn’t crack
I was twenty and in love

When we got back you said you felt drunk
I felt hungover

I went back to the library steps and sat
(This you don’t know)
Waited for you to come out again
So I could try again.

It's ridiculous how good this is. Not afraid to admit I shed a tear...
Stuff this great makes me embarrassed to post here!! Thanks so much for sharing and hope to see more from you ;)

    wow...thanks.

this is actually an old stream of consciousness I jotted down in a notebook a while ago...kind of fixed it up, transcribed it....
on another read....I'd fix the line about bottled water...I say "bottled" and bottles...need a word change one way or another...

    I like this one a lot. :)

I can clearly see someone on the library steps.
"Don't be faint-hearted, I have a solution! We shall go and commandeer some small craft, then drift at leisure until we happen upon another ideal place for our waterside supper with riparian entertainments."
  • shameless bump?

    Wishing it had all happened
    Differently

I went back to the library steps and sat
    (This you don’t know)
    Twisting hands neverously
You were asleep, no doubt, a block away

    I couldn't sleep for days

Waiting hopelessly for you to come out again
    So I could start over

    But would the cap crack?
Or am I still just a kid?
