the etymology (sp?) of "tit for tat"?


like, uh... where it came from and what it means?

    Etymology: alteration of earlier tip for tap, from tip (blow) + for + tap
    Date: 1556

    : an equivalent given in return (as for an injury) : retaliation in kind
