there was a time when
i was happy and complete
looked upon each sunrise
as another chance to go out
and be with the world
many busy days and nights
with many people to consider
work and play and rest
and plans to make for the future
then you entered my mind
wanting to find out its contents
and i gave willingly
for what is given to me i share
you encouraged my words
gave many a praising nod
that i took with grains of salt
but something else happened
if only i had known
when you touched my hand
and the world stopped
how you really did feel
not through print
but by your lips and tongue

that you did not mean it
that you offered empty words
as a means to decipher
my own independence
and that is all

that your matching of wit
had nothing to do with me

but that you went too far

with her permission or not
