ok so i wrote about 10 songs this year and i kinda want to share them with other people than my family and friends.....just to have another fresh objective opinion or view....

here are my hesitations....

a. i'm kinda vulnerable when it comes to this kinda stuff....i mean i wrote it all from me you know....
b. kinda affraid of someone saying...well that sucks!
c. kinda affraid people like it and steal it..... because it's not offically copyrighted yet.....

so what do i do?

some advice would be nice...

first off, I've never seen anyone say that something sucks

but I've worried about people stealing stuff before too
The most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway, is that its you, and that you're standing in the doorway.

I write down good reasons to freeze to death in my spiral ring notebook. But in the long tresses of your hair--I am a babbling brook.
  • I don't know about elsewhere, but in the UK you can copyright your written work by mailing it to yourself and keeping the envelope on return sealed so it's not tampered with but shows the postmark to prove the rough date of composition.

My work is copyrighted Shranamonragh Bridgesongs, by the way.

  • It's true! You can, alternatively, take your work to a public library and ask them to stamp it with the date. Something official will date the text; so if you write a great lyric in 2004, post it on here and someone puts the lyrics to a million selling single in 2005, you can produce your dated document and shout "Ker-ching!!!!" very loudly and happily.

Same in the US. It's a rough way of doing it, and i would recommend sending a few of them at once (all with the name of the piece on the outside) so that way if something happens to one envelope (gets opened accedently, coffee spills on it, never delivered ect.) you have back up.

You'll have previous court decisions to back you up if someone does steal it.

    Best of luck to you!

  • so is it possible in the US to walk into a library and get a stamp and that equals a legal copyright?.....i'd love some more info on this....

i have no idea if this works or not...but if you save your poetry/lyrics t o your hard drive... it will tell you exactly what date and time you saved it.

wether that will stand in court of law or not remains to be seen.

  • Have you considered presenting yourself as an alias? Isn't that the magic of BBS's and Chatrooms, which is to maintain a sort anonnymity while communicating and making some sort of presence? It doesn't quite solve the issue of possibility of stealing stuff. But you could really be creative since you're tight with the Web master. You could set up several aliases and perhaps present your work in pieces for critque as a nobody.

Anyway, having you submit something for critque kind of puts you in awkward position. It's like Jesus Christ making a magical appearance in Rome and asking his followers if his water into wine trick was little over the top, that is if it's honesty that your looking for. My two cents.
  • I think that there's nothing better than to be critiqued by a body that you consider your peers. Sure it can be harsh, but the potential for this group to provide a compass to a path, technique or style you have never considered is inifinite.
