I.
Is it strange that I am not inspired
by your thunderous hills,
your slow lakelike river,
your overcast, drowsy air?
Is it strange that I am unmoved
by your sad long tale
of molten rock (hardened steel)
of layoffs and picket lines
or suicides?
Is it above all odd
that I am always happiest here
among the din of your downtrodden
dead,
sucking your Industrial Hope
like Jello through a coffee stir?
II.
The white and brown houses
(little giftbox sized things)
are stacked on the hillside
like haphazard pancakes,
so close to each other
it seems from this distance
you could spit into
your neighbor's kitchen.
The trees
(bulbous barely green things)
are nuzzled densely among the homes,
like proud plant pubics.
The fog clouds slide slowly across it all
like television shadows
across a stroke-stricken face.

there's no time to cry
soon i will be leavin'
look me in the eye
no matter what's in front of me
it's your face that i'll see
So do I (read the end of poem one again), but that doesn't mean it isn't intrinsically sad.
