If you ever give a journal to someone as a gift
don't mark up the inside cover
with your personal inscription
on how great the person is
and how much they've meant to you
(inspired you etc);
don't subtly attempt
to weave yourself into their thoughts
as they begin to write
so you'll pop up in
poem after poem,
so that long after you are gone from their life
their art still reflects
the image of when you were there.
Why not just let
the pages become what they will
(unencumbered by your scrawled
sappy clap-trap)
and work on becoming the kind of person
who can be remembered without reminders?
You egotistical bitch,
it is too nice a journal for me
to just throw it away!
