To Have Only One

But to have only one of these lives is insufferable!
Just today I was at the ocean, and filled with unquenchable
Desire to be a sailor. Of course, it can take decades
To be a good boatsman; a lifetime really.
And in the shops and eateries lining the beach,
A vast array of callings and specialties I'd love to master
And call my own. The Sushi Cook. The Kite Maker.
The Digeridoo Blower. All with years, and time not one
Of us has quite enough of.
Early in my own spiral I formed a passion for words
And simple leisure, now preached, seldom practiced,
And too late in the show to double-back now.
O for more lives!
More chances to master the yo-yo, acrobatics,
Cabinetmaking!
O for more lives, more twists, more yelps,
More things to be good at.
To speak a thousand lingos!
The thoughts of those distant dreams
And forlorn employs stretch to infinity,
A dot on the horizon of this ocean I gape at,
Remembering a specific wave that happened
Just once, twenty years ago,
When I was five.

Not my best poem ever, although it could be vastly improved by I believe some ommisions. However, a conversation with Ali tonight about the inspirational power of the ocean prompted me to post it, because the thoughts in the poem still seem quite valid to me (this was written over two years ago...I'm 27 now, the math at the end of the text makes me 25)....don't know if I'll ever improve the poem or allow it to stand as is. Thanks for reading. :)

hey honey....it speaks to me, and speaks of the ocean.....and all the possibilities......(although the ocean only brings me nightmares.....but not recently)......I want to get my pilot's licence, learn to sew, and learn Mandarin amongst many other things, but what do I do, but sit on my butt all day long - 2moro I'm buying Swann's Way - if it's available, and I'm going to read 'A la Recherche du Temps Perdu - or like I said to my old good friend Rob, who lives in Texas, and whom I used to temp for when he worked in London 'in remembrance of temps past'.....hehehehehehee......(can any1 understand me?).....it's good.....I wish I had more lives, and indeed I may have.....I might have enough lives to live until I do so wish......I want to do a road trip on a motorbike with my half-brother Eamonn across the US......my Mom is only gonna tell him when he comes back from Letterkenny for his hols that I'm his half-sister, and he's nearly 27 or something......I want to live multiple lives, or to have eternity......forever.....I seriously think I might be a candidate for eternity and all evidence notwithstanding, that I might live FOREVER.......I'd like to meet you at the bar at the end of the world for an apperitif and maybe something else......cos I want you to be happy!!!!
....they're asking me to prove why I should be allowed to stay with my baby in Australia, because I'm mentally ill......and they think I should leave......

Me too, but not with Eamonn, with Jas-on! My guy.

He's building a bike, and we're going to take off to every ocean on the planet.

Until it gets finished we're heading to the bar, I'm drinking, he's driving; we're riding on the bike his daddy won. It's so good to be the woman of a good daddy's son.

ISN--your responses are always painfully beautiful. I thank you for your passion and careful readings. And I always understand what you're saying! :) I'd be happy to meet you at the bar at the end of the world; however, I'll only be drinking Dr. Pepper!

And I am happy. Very happy. Thanks again!

Sounds like making the most of the one you've got--which is really what it's all about!

yes, he's a good one. i wish i could clone him, wrap him up, and send him off -- as long as he didn't end up saying, "I like pizza," to every pretty girl.

here's the thing about him. once a long time ago we were at this concert, and he and one of his big buddies sandwiched me between them and moved us up to the front. once we got there, he put both of his arms around me, held on to the railing, and kept the rest of the crowd off of me. this girl beside us kept getting knocked into us. he said to her, you want to get in here? and she did -- he held the crowd off of both of us at the same time.

i'd be pretty lousy if i didn't make much of him, but i do wish i could make more. if only i'd become a scientist. . .

It's a real problem isn't it? To be interested in lots of things and to know that many of these things would take too much time to really pursue. :)

It's only a problem when you take the time to think about it... ;)

yes! that was a funny as hell scene, the I like pizza -- some days I swear, I'll just look at someone and go, I like pizza, it's the watered down version of me, and that's a much better version a lot days.

The best part is when he tries to put the pizza in his pocket. Hilarious.

okay folks, I have a question for yez.....I am gonna learn to sew sewn.....(soon)......my friend is siending (sending) me a sewing machine from the UK........and I can knit already.......I've just watched The Aviator, and if they can let someone as crazy as Howard Hughes fly planes......then why not me, but I think I need to build up to it.....like when I became a motorbike courier......first I was a cycle courier......ya know......so the question is......with the big payoff of learning to fly.....and upping my life a notch......I was wondering, do you think I should learn more Korean before I start learning Chinese......I know quite a bit of Korean (I've studied Korean and Spanish), but do you think I'd be a chickenshit if I didn't learn any more, and went onto the big hot dog.....Chinese.....I'll need quite a lot of time to learn Chinese.....and Korean is esy.....not Chinesy jus esy......so should I get more learning tools for Korean and learn a bit more or jus start with Chinese (Mandarin)......the big pay off is when I start learning to fly.....and sewing is coming up soon.....(sorry Groover)
....they're asking me to prove why I should be allowed to stay with my baby in Australia, because I'm mentally ill......and they think I should leave......
