Some of the happiest people I ever knew
I met in my younger days;
Fresh people with
Absurdist humor and
Cackling laughs.
To us the world
Was made to be funny in,
Sorrow and temperance knew no host
With us;
Us flagrantly smiling and jabbering fools
Saying things like Eskimo Shindig
And guffawing because
The meaning was barely there,
Shrouded behind speculation,
Innuendo.
I never knew one of them to play a piano,
Or recite great tomes
In tones learned and rehearsed.
Not once did we fleshy things
Cross the threshold of a museum;
Nary did we darken the corners of institutions
Which knew the secrets of being,
Of creating, or setting things right.
Someone once told me that
Naivety could turn a wretched life
Bearable;
They told me this from the back
Of a broken down green van
Stranded in a stone driveway
With fresh, upturned earth in the front yard
Where a Labrador Retriever
Had just been laid to rest.
Although I was still a young young man,
I didn’t even smile about it,
But the woman
In the back
Of the van;
She smiled.
Things get less or more humorous
The more or less you understand them.
That’s what makes life funny.
