A friend the other day asked
Quite seriously
If they still built buildings
Brick-by-brick
(one at a time, masonrylike)
As we drove mildly
Past scads of offices
Warehouses
(seperated all by gorgeous
lamenting gardens landscaping);
She crooned
It would take so much time.
(there is not enough time, there is never enough time)
To put a brick upon a brick
Stone upon a stone
Squinting your hardened eyes
Into lazy sun
Waxing securely about the longevity
Of a day's work
Is surely time's most flagrant laughter,
Nature's cruelest joke.
