the new young girl
behind the counter
at the coffee shop
wore a tight light blue
t-shirt today
& she smiled at me
like as if I were
a long-haired dachsund pup;
she tried to ring me up
for my large to-go coffee
but her Texas Instruments
plastic cash register
didn't like the idea;
it beeped & whirred at her
& each time she tried
she got more frustrated
than the last
saying quite quietly
sorry
averting her eyes
(brown applepie things)
from mine.
it's OK, I told her,
you'll get it.
she took a deep breath
(the t-shirt rippled like fanning wheat)
and then she got it;
the drawer popped
she handed me the paper cup
said one more time
sorry.
I wanted to hug her
& thank her for the smile
& the t-shirt
& tell her she was wonderful
& that in less than a week
I was sure she'd be a master of that
cash register
but all I did
was walk outside,
sip the coffee
& light a cigarette.
I also sneezed.
I walked around the block
finished the smoke
passed the coffee shop again
contemplated going in,
telling her.
I didn't.
moments pass,
they don't fade.

she wore light of blue,
and smiling
she wore a bag of prisims
a canvas bag
weighted in light
that was fun!
The risk I took was calculated, but man, am I bad at math - The Mincing Mockingbird
I like the casual atmosphere and the indecisive narrator.
Also, the end lines are deep - reminds me of something Ed Vedder could've said (I'm sure he hasn't though )
and I would want ed to say that to me.
Youve struck a new chord of fame in my heart.:)
