Taxiing Down a Runway in a 737

Waiting for our chance to leap,
leaning my forehead
on the cold glass window,
I spot an Egret
a hundred yards away,
on the sun-bathed shore
of a man-made lake.
It is preparing to jump
a chain-link fence
and—perhaps—disappear into the saltmeadow grass,
the palms and ruddy mangrove.
In the early morning light
it is whiter than anything I have ever seen.
I have never wanted to be something
other than myself
so badly
