It's a Shame

Sometimes I stop to think it’s a shame
we are not all of us constantly in our twilight years,
able to reflect with generous wisdom
on the long slow oblivion we’ve been
enmeshed in for a lifetime,
our gray pearls of wisdom backed up
by foxholes
and multiple marriages;
instead, most of us are forced to imagine
our lives times two, or three,
just to get to anywhere worth being
(the long slow car rides
and fights with parents don’t count
for beans
in a world where cancer eats people
and babies get burned alive)

When I'm driving through the desert, I want a photograph of me, draping my self over shelf and mesa
as if all that geography were a slim mattress
and I was larger than anything else on the landscape.
Call that, "times two or times three"... or even three hundred.
