When you said she had died
and he had decided against you
in the same week
my heart squeezed for you—
these helpless pains
rot even most delightful sunlight
and turn newest Spring
to yawing stomach—
and I was helpless too,
in the face of such unchangeables.
I thought first of course
of telling you time heals
and other such things
I have said to you before
or pompously directing you
to my previous poems,
wisely nodding at you
I've given this advice already.
There is no advice young lady
(not for this or anything else)
which would right your churning bow;
the only thing to do
(and the only thing that happens)
is to weather the squall
(hold fast to your hat)
so when it happens again and again and again
(as it will)
you'll know the quickest way to the lighthouse.
Some of us will be there waiting for you;
others, you will have to help guide in.

It is like a Bach violin line that has the melody and the background strung together. The violinist must pull the important notes out and keep the others at a quieter level to project the message.
