My god, they were on fire during these sessions...

Of the Girl
Insignificance
Greivance
Sleight of Hand
Nothing As It Seems

And then ofcourse the stuff that didn't make the album...

Puzzles & Games (SO much better than Light Years)
Education
Fatal
Sad

Its a shame that Binaural although a good album wasn't the monster it could of been.

I would agree with this...the sessions are incredible...the album, IMO, not so much (still very good, but by Pearl Jam standards not one of my favorites).

Over the years i've made numerous Binaural Sessions CD's that i much prefer to the original.

    Of The Girl
    Breakerfall
    Grievance
    Sad
    Thin Air
    Fatal
    Insignificance
    Sleight of Hand
    Education
    Puzzles & Games
    Soon Forget
    Parting Ways
    Nothing As It Seems

Yeah, next after Ten, the Binaural sessions had the second best ouput in terms of quantity and quality.

Although, we've yet to discover the full fruits of the Avocado sessions....

I totally agree. Binaural does not really "work" as an album in my opion. But some of the tunes from that chapter of PJ are completely off the grid....
  • some day you will all wake up and have an Epiphany and realize Binaural is fucking AWESOME!!!!!

    not good,not ok,not alright,not decent,not so-so

    BUT

    FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!

IMHO, the Binaural sessions saw PJ at their most ambitious. The original tracklisting of Binaural is tremendous. If you ever have the time, burn out a new copy of Binaural in that tracklisting and just enjoy. Light years (no pun intended) better than Riot Act and Avocado IMHO.

I think Light Years is one of my least favorite songs.

The word cheese comes to mind when I hear it.

I think these recording sessions are the best the band has ever produced. Easily my favorite Pearl Jam album, and the outtakes are amazing enough on their own that there should have been an EP of these songs before Riot Act.

Wow. It took me a few years to get into Binaural, but had they included some of the songs they left off of it it might have been one of my favorite PJ albums from the beginning.

Puzzles and Games is beautiful-- I always liked Light Years, but I think P and G had the potential to be a better song, if it wasn't so already. You can hear Thumbing My Way in this song also. Vedder's voice is really pretty in Puzzles and Games and I think the music just blends with his voice better on this version than it did in Light Years.

Letter to the Dead (aka Sad)-- what an awsome name! I always loved Sad and was baffled as to why it wasn't on Binaural. It could easily have fit in with the uptempo songs on the album.

Including Sad, Puzzles and Games, Fatal, and Anything in Between would have made Binaural a more accessible album without taking away from its creative brilliance at all. I can't believe they left off Sad because it was too poppy and didn't fit. That's ridiculous. That's underachieving because you don't want attention. It's an awsome song and should have been on there. The only thing I can't agree with PJ about is their tendency to throw out a song if it's deemed too poppy, no matter how good it is.

I don't understand how anyone can say Puzzles and Games and Anything In Between would be awesome on the album. They're not finished tracks, people! Eddie mumbling lyrics is not a complete song! You might see the potential in those tracks, but how can you put them on an album with all the finished songs? Don't they seem out of place?

Personally, I think they're both garbage. In Between is the better of the two, but Light Years is one of the few songs on Binaural I actually like.

i love Light Year. the re-arrangement is much better. first time i heard Puzzle & Game i thought it was a Given To Fly demo with different words...(obviously it isnt, i was wrong), but i read recently that it was turned into Light Years specifically because the band thought it sounded too much like a song theyd done before....

Light Years deserves the place on the album.

if Fatal, Sad, Education were on it, and Breakerfall sounded more like it does live...then sure, you'd have a fantastic album.

BUT it wouldnt be Binaural to my ears. if i dont have to look for the great song under the murky sound of Breakerfall, and then akwardly dance to Evacuation before i get to trip to Light Years' outro jam and NAIS dave-gilmour-esque guitar....well then, that wouldnt be the same experience at all.
