Legs From Wings

My leg shakes; the song starts to play.
Before I can look, your face fills my thoughts.
A name is unveiled, and my heart sinks a rung.
More ladder to climb, hand over hand.
Over and over, all through the day,
The sad, silly scene gets replayed
Ad nauseum, the butterflies are getting anxious.
Reversing, they find comfort in old cocoons;
Curl up, devolve to lose their wings and crawl.
Legs sprout, and they inch away,
Slinking slowly, not looking back.
Wait for the call, someone to notice they've left.
Once beautiful angels in flight,
They disappear into the night.
