Are you Peggy's girl?
Just look at them big eyes
just like hers, bright wide open
on a roamin' world at least a holler long.
I remember her in that holler, walkin',
lookin' at brown trees riding bareback on white
comp'ny hills as far as you can see.
It's winter now, and those new once-a-year
shoes don't look so new now, six inches deep
in the Winifrede snow with the promise
of more a-comin'. Sister's hand-me down coat
hangs heavy on her slight shoulders
as she skips up the tracks, snow
smiling in the blonde hair peekin' out of her blue hat.
That new coat from Uncle Jim just a promise now,
three weeks down the road,
three miles up the holler.

Yeah, girl, you got her eyes.
