American Town

Tear down the old strip mall
Blast a hole in the ground
Draw a line in the sand
Put on your crown
Life in an old
American town
The ones you keep afloat
Are the ones you let drown

I'm rich because you work hard for me
Get on the bus, I'll drive my humvee
I'll pollute the air that your kids have to breathe
I will never be you, and you will never be me
Home of the brave, land of the free
Yeah, a free and brave new economy
You still believe this is democracy
But you're a slave to money; get down on your knees

Please sir can you drop a dollar
In that cup on the ground
I swear I ain't like them
I ain't no dirty boozehound
Life in an old
American town
Nothing I ever stole
Was being used anyhow

I got no change for you, I spent it all on me
Go find a job or faith-based charity
Or go ahead and take strike three
Then you'll have your maximum security
You'll never take this life from me
I took an oath, I got a charge to keep
I pull the strings of democracy
And you're a slave to the money that has set me free

  • Ahhh, the money, it makes some feel so close to godliness.

I enjoyed reading this and I liked your use of the italics to break up one train of thought from the other.

Thanks guys. This is a song I've been working on for about four years now. The lyrics are definately better than they used to be. Too bad I can't sing how'd I like to, though some claim I do allright with it. When I get the new lyrics recorded, I'll post I link. It would be great to get some reactions, positive or negative (i mean constructive criticism!)
