drowning in eugenia

i thought that i was saving a drowning flower
as the sun finally said hello
just in time to lock eyes
with this ocean-eyed girl
from eugenia

the closer i tried to get
the louder the sound
the slammed door made
in this quiet oregon town

the pacific leaves weren't the only thing falling in autumn
this wasn't as scenic though
nor was there a bottom for this falling man
for nature has no emotion
leaving him to drown beneath the coming ocean storm

i thought that i caught death
lying alone underneath the thick indigo blanket
holding my eyes captive
blinding me with thoughts of the ocean-eyed girl from eugenia
drowning what had grown with an ocean made of tears.
