NIGHTFISH

On my island in the bay
I stand frozen on a narrow beach,
Watching killer whales play.

It’s dusk upon the surrounding sky.
I am alone at the northern
End of this sandy crucifix.

My breath escapes like prisoned ghosts
As I notice how Christmas the
City lights appear tonight.

Not wanting to waste the moment
I rush inside the metal compound
To search for my cannon.

Salt water falls from the sky
As the whales continue to frolic
Only meters away.

“Magical” is the word today.

I take four steps on the sand before
A tail fin cracks the water.

The force of a fire hose instantly knocks me over.

My first thought is of saving the camera in my hand.
I struggle but only sink lower,
Continually swallowing the icy quicksand

…not the way I thought this dream would end.

I like it...and especially like the beginning imagery.
