Defining the magic

a good poem is like a cold beer
when you need it,
a good poem is like a hot turkey
sandwich when you’re
hungry,
a good poem is a gun when
the mob corners you,
a good poem is something that
allows you to walk through the streets of
death,
a good poem can make death melt like
hot butter,
a good poem can frame agony and
hang it on a wall,
a good poem can let your feet touch
China,
a good poem can let you shake hands
with Mozart,
a good poem can let you shoot craps
with the devil
and win,
a good poem can do almost anything,
and most important
a good poem knows when to
stop.

~ Charles Bukowski (August 16, 1920 – March 9, 1994)

Some days you wake up and sit on a park bench next to an eighty year old Russian architect, and some days you don't. I think this is my new life philosophy.

    China,

What if you're a Chinese woman
    in small, bound feet,
    small, tight shoes?
Where's the romance of poetry then?
In Canadian dreams of proud Ms. Bigfoot, free?

    a bird's poem is hunger
for a sky never to stop
until a land of unhungry men.

a good poem is a gun
    that knows it's pointing

    a good poem knows
if it can melt death like hot butter
    it cannot end itself.

a good poem knows about the transitoriness of logic
    and spits in its
    face.

A good poem cannot know itself. ;)

a good poem does not need to know
    what can be
    felt.
a good poem is always that self-righteous unkle
who is never invited for christmas dinner
    and proud of
    it.

    phew, i'm glad you do!
i'm a bit too drunk myself for a battle of wits in another than my native tongue...
    :D

but everyone feel free to continue defining the magic that is a good poem...
