lies will make them men
they'll wipe our fears away
when the colors change.

there is no threat to you or me
lower our defenses from yellow to green.

lies
are in their heads.
and don't you tread on me...
and lies
are in their mouths.
and don't you tread on me...

the south will fight the south
if we cannot find
one thousand votes today.
you cannot take away...
what you cannot trace.

lies will make us men
when our leader says
this is the end...
they're coming Home.

did you hear the news today?
fifteen more died in vain.
did you hear the news today?
our leader says we're okay.
lies make him a man.
he takes our fears away.
he makes everything okay.
his lies make him a man...
now the war is starting all over again....
his lies make him a man...
and those lies have made a mess...

  • WOW! suede, this piece is excellent! I love it! I really dug the following couple a lines I quoted down here! Oh, how true, how true!

    "you cannot take away...
    what you cannot trace."

I also enjoyed the repetition of "and those lies have made a mess..." at the end, it drives the point home! Thank you for sharing this poem! :)

Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes and this one is from Voltaire, circa 1767, and it is, "Anyone who has the power to make you believe obsurdities has the power to make you commit injustices."

Oooo, and it also made me think of an old poem I wrote to the same man, so I'm gonna be a brat and pop it in your post here too. Hope you don't mind! :)

    Here's mine:

    ...nothing but the truth

How can you look me in the eye
And try to sell me the lie
As the world continues to die
Will you be the one to cry

    Your thoughts have been
    so clearly concocted
    You deliver them with
    such egotism and ease

    Your suit looks so sharp
    it cuts to the touch
    Just like your words
    through their brains

    Selling thoughts of
    freedom and love
    Through fucking wars
    and children's blood

    Work that hatred
Teach it in your history books
Hand it down and hand it down
    Generation upon generation

Tradition and religion are so important
    They only want the shit
    that you say is dipped
    in the finest of gold

Sell your soul to the infantry
    They really believe you care
Think they may get a better education
Then their country fucking rapes them

    "Manufacture of consent"
    by your god & government
    Media fraud and false statements
    The truth is latent
Forget your perfect offering, there is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in. - Leonard Cohen

you'd give your blood for oil.
i'd give my blood for no war.
    and what for? what for?
you'd give your life for money.
i'd give my life for no more.
    and what for? what for?
    you sell us your democracy.
    but i'm not buying anything...anymore.
    no more. no more.
you'd buy a house for satan,
    better not keep him waiting...
so, your brother bought you a house.

i'd give my blood for Love.
you'd give your blood for more bloodshed.
    and it's sad. it's sad.
i'd give my blood for happiness.
you'd give your blood for more misery for me.
    and i see. it's true.
i'd give my blood for peace, just once...even for you.
and don't you know? it's the truth.
and i don't need your democracy to make me happy.
and i don't need a lot of things to make me happy.
and i don't need your democracy to make me...
...and art is dead. yeah, art is dead, i said...
so let's drink, to more bloodshed. more bloodshed, yeah...
    everything you do is cuckoo.
and it's sad. it's sad. so sad.
so how about a war that's for no more wars?
    how about it?

thanks enlightened. i really liked your poem, especially the last 4 lines:

    "Manufacture of consent"
    by your god & government
    Media fraud and false statements
    The truth is latent

    and another one...

    thursday morning newspaper

    i cry for you.
    i'm speechless.
    i'm sickened.

    why you?
were you covered in Red, White, and Blue?
    defenseless,
    lifeless,
    i'm a mess,
    in a world a mess.
    no remedy to suggest.

    you died, for what?
for sins of kids who have it programmed in?
    they'll never change,
    and we'll never change.

you can't save a fish that's already drowned.
    swim down, swim down,
    turn around, or drown.
    it's not your fault,
    get out, get out.
    you didn't have to die,
    but you did, you died,
    and i cry.

    i'll never forget you,
you were on the front page of my newspaper.
    hung like banners from rafters,
i starred at the paper, and i just sat there.

four Americans were murdered on my birthday,
    in the worst way.
that was not one of my birthday wishes,
    did you listen?
i never did like reading the paper on thursday.
i never did like reading the news...
    that happened on my birthday.

    but a leader insists,
these are people worth our lives to invest.
    but i insist,
    was there something i missed?

i can't shake you from my mind,
    not this time.
you were on the front page of my newspaper.
you were on the front page of my newspaper.

    :D YAY, thanks! And you're welcome! :)

Oh, and here's some of me other favorite quotes that kinda work here:

"The truth is so often the reverse of what has been told to us by our culture that we cannot turn our heads far enough around to see it. " - Howard Zinn

"When they looked at us, they smiled - we were their soldiers, after all, protecting their ideals and their money." & "Everything is politics, especially everything that shouldn't be."-Peter Straub (The Throat)

Man, I feel like listening to "War Pigs" at full tilt right now!

Have a good one, my friend! And keep 'em coming! :)
