How people clamour for attention
How they forget about what's real
How they get wrapped up in themselves
And forget that others feel
They put on their smiles
And they put you on trial
And they draw and they quarter you
But once they consume you
They martyr you
Funny how that works
How they forget about what's real
How they get wrapped up in themselves
And forget that others feel
They put on their smiles
And they put you on trial
And they draw and they quarter you
But once they consume you
They martyr you
Funny how that works
Forget your perfect offering, there is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in. - Leonard Cohen

know that nothing material lasts,
love only,
love like no other,
Be the first to donate,
the first to listen,
take on anothers burdens,
be the first being to be truly humane.
hmmmmmmmmmmmm
this poem is perplexing to say the least
metaphor for?
It means what it means. I'm sorry if it is perplexing, it was how I felt & I refuse to explain as I feel that you should take from it what you want. That is the beuaty of poetry---it can mean many things or nothing, depending on the reader.
Sorry keven.
i know what being means...

mar·tyr ( P ) Pronunciation Key (märtr)
n.
One who chooses to suffer death rather than renounce religious principles.
One who makes great sacrifices or suffers much in order to further a belief, cause, or principle.
One who endures great suffering: a martyr to arthritis.
One who makes a great show of suffering in order to arouse sympathy.
tr.v. mar·tyred, mar·tyr·ing, mar·tyrs
To make a martyr of, especially to put to death for devotion to religious beliefs.
To inflict great pain on; torment.
there's something missing here... the result of being martyred... ie: the martyr is loved because he/she died for your cause, and is dead... so you don't have to own up to your own ineptitude for not furthering your own principles
