Being Enlightened

Your embrace shakes through me,
rattles memories free their chains,
unexpected reunions,
anticipated but unprepared.
I want my hug to quell your tremors,
return you just to Dad,
who pet named me, Pitroshe,
bought his girls silk roses at Christmas,
took me to the gold's at Exhibition Place,
my first Jay's game
with my Dad.
Sure, I remember when you forgot me too,
after Brownies,
I waited
and waited,
until Mom came...
I remember,
how she smashed your bottles on the drive,
how she screamed at you,
how she smakced at you,
while I cried
and told her to stop.
Not a new problem, just out of control.
You always snubbed any help...
It got so I was always mad at you too,
acted like I didn't care,
it was easier.
I did my time in a similar hell
(familiar hell),
it all exploded into a fireball after awhile,
and we're the scattered ashes.
When I see you,
I know who it is
but I don't know who you are.
I remember the stumbler,
the guy who had me in the truck
and was riding the guardrail...
but, also the Dad who played catch,
the Dad who took me to see my 1st movie, E.T.
To see you so low,
a hollow, shakey shell,
scrounging for room and board
and a pack of smokes...
I can't understand why you threw away so much for so little.

Forget your perfect offering, there is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in. - Leonard Cohen

No one needs a smile more than someone who fails to give one,
After you die...you know how to LIVE!
