    i like to knit

    i've heard crocheting is easier

a little poetry yarn, inspired by this thread

    somedays,
    after pacing the floor
    the needles just won't work
    or is it me?
i'm trying to save the world,
    with a scarf?
    or maybe just some money
    or time
    or the lost art
    of saving time and money
    by spending it with kids
    knitting something that will last
    longer than their attention spans.

    they've proven that theirs
    is longer than mine.
    maybe they've got better thread
    or nimbler fingers
    maybe they've figured out
    the lost art
    of saving time and money
    by teaching it to me.

    these kids
    make cool a strange adjective
    that only they understand
    i really thought
    elderly grandmas were only "cool"
    in yarns from pearl jam
    but i've found that kids
    have reinvented the past time
    of old rockers;
    they all say it too
    last year my grandma,
when i was little my grandma,
during that last snow storm my grandma,
    taught me how to knit

    so now they're teaching me,
and it's not quite oral tradition,
i guess it's more like muscle memories.
  • I like the poem:) I would love to knit something related to pj too but i'm not quite ready to start creating my own patterns. I'll be sure to post a pic when i do eventually figure something out. I just learned how to "purl" and was thinking of the jammers. In fact, I think there's even a pj reference in the "Stitch and Bitch" book in the purling section....

I like knitting when ever I get around to it (which isn't often) but I couldn't knit much more than a scarf. I once knitted a book mark with call colours, then sewed on it with wool their name and a flower pattern and put a little fringe on it. As a selfproclaimed dag, I thought it was cool :D I also bought myself the stich n bitch book, but haven't got around to knitting since then and that was about two years ago!!!

Loved the Knitting poem. GREAT!!! :)

I had to rip out 10 rows of a baby blanket this weekend. It was a frustrating experience that's for sure. The yarn I use (and I should know this by now) is sold as one ball, but it usually contains a few pieces. I knitted one of the knots into the blanket, and then I acidentally unknotted it which ruined 3 rows. Then, because I'm a tight knitter, when I used my needle to latch back on I would just tighten an earlier stitch. However, as a needlepointer for 27 years I figured something out. I stitched in a random thread of yarn throughout the free stitches, and then when I put the needle back in they didn't drop because of the barrier.

I was really moving on that blanket. What a drag. I decided to continue a needlepoint project I had been working on, but I'll get back to the blanket in no time. Talk about art with colors - there's so much potential with knitting.

    Yeah for poetry about knitting!

Do you really want to learn? Is there a way to webcast on this thing?

One of the VPs of where I work holds a knitting circle in her office once a week. I just emailed her if we could webcast it for someone way over there in England where, of course, no one could teach you. :)

Wouldn't it be funny if we could?

She brought up a good point that there are many online tutorials, and someone in England should be able to teach you, burtschips. Well, you never know until you try, eh?

So, I brought up how creative I was with my tapestry needle and scrap yarn to my VP's knitting group, and people were piping up, "Oh yeah, I've done that, you can also do . . ." or "You can try a coat hanger . . ." I felt like such a beginner . . . It just goes to show that necessity is the foundation of invention or however that goes.

  • What is a VP Ms Haiku?? just a very person??

I have no real desire to knit anymore but I imagine it is relaxing; much like strumming on a geeetar. Although I do like the sound of this webcast thing.... A virtual knitter, but the time difference would difficult to overcome.

Vice President, but very much a person, too :) That would be cool to have a virtual knitting group. That would be very cool, actually. Do you think Pearl Jam would be ultra-trendsetters of the music scene, and endorse a virtual knitting group? . . . oh my my I just made myself laugh :D

  • I am sure they all sit around talking about free-stitching, street-stitching, pipe-stitching, the whole lot. They are right out there on the edge, inspiring, pioneers..... do you think??

  • I don't know what you just said either. but i imagine you have solid base from which to improve and grow in stature amongst the knitters of NJ. a knitting guru you will be.... how about a knitting mantra..... A better knitter I will be, every day in every way, you will see, a better knitter I will be. :)

Near DC? t thought it was NJ
