What's this worth?

Some things are distinguished by personal taste
peanut, almonds, cashews
cantalope, watermellon and honeydew
spinach, lettuce and cabbage too

other things are distinguished by function
water, grape juice and wine
cowards and villians and heros so fine

how do we sort?
where do differences, the important divisions show?

maybe in their depth?
a puddle isn’t an ocean
maybe it’s effort and what the item is made of?
a quick doodle vs. a mosiac floor of a thousand miniature tiles

maybe it’s in the way they are digested?
or whether they suit our taste?
yet perhaps the difference is one of longevity?
maybe stamina?

is it seen in a temporary leaning rather than a lifetime of loyalty?
some people arrive in disguise, wearing costumes so well
it can be confusing
(maybe it’s even confusing to them?!)

But, and here’s a wonderful “but...”
others are what they appear to be!
I’m starting to see,
heros come in all shapes, sizes, and cloaks of honesty
