Wrong sense of time

When you've done hard time
for a long time
you can manage a year or two
in your sleep,
or standing on your head,
while humming a tune & telling a joke
'cuz you know the end is coming
you can smell it
you can almost touch it
and that's where your heart is
"a few more years to freedom"
becomes a bed-time chant
and if no one is waiting
that's okay
but this odd sense of time
is apparent when someone on the outside
needs you to get moving
um, like, now...
