Growth and visibility

I remember reading a long German novel
it had been translated, of course
I'm not such a glutton for punishment that I'd
take the time to decipher the whole thing myself
It was the tale of a family
a long tale, with many twists
and sub-stories
yet, out of the whole book,
the main idea I've remembered is this:
growth often isn't as visible at the time
by the time it's manifest in the material world,
often it's past
the family's mansion was built by the son
after the father was gone and the fortune
was no longer growing
I know that author was on to a big truth
so I think about it sometimes

    interesting
The only thing I enjoy is having no feelings....being numb rocks!

And I won't make the same mistakes
    (Because I know)
Because I know how much time that wastes
    (And function)
    Function is the key
