Random midnight thoughts
are hardly random
since they are well thought of
if we admit to it that is
and don't hide behind
some dwelming hallucinogen
for random midnight thoughts
keep us wide awake
and fiercely aware
they come more easily
than at every other moment
of my hard fought days
without a destiny to fulfill
they linger
and mockingly tickle
my not yet broken nerves
they never break
they keep my eyes from closing
and even then
they firmly hold their ground
and stay piercingly sharp
as needles under my fingernails
