Well... B.E. says the news is good inspiration, and August Storm proved it... so here's my news-spawned offering... about the DC Snipers... back before they were caught and I still thought it was one person...

i scrape winter's first frost
from my windshield
and watch pieces of my soul
float away with each exhalation
sacrificing them to the throat
of the beast
the specters mingle and fade
whispering trivia in their deaths:
does the beltway sniper
see breath and souls
in his scope?
those funny little bunnies
and their news shows and police cars...
i motor off to work,
safe in my own private universe,
and ponder the cleansing of the innocent
while a mockery of the sun
dances with my bloodshot eye
i think of the snow and who i was
the last time it fell
i think of the warmth markedly absent
from an ice star's disrobing gaze over rush hour
i think of how my blemishes are obvious to god
in his dim fluorescent x-ray vision
or how the soul of newly spilt blood
flees screaming from the cold, dark pavement
in a panic of freedom and loss
oh, what a brave beast, that beltway sniper
he does love his funny little bunnies
and their tears...
