"Down By The River (For Nicole)"

So my girlfriend and I went for a bike ride down by our college's (St. Cloud State University) the other night, and we stopped and sat by a tree (and if you're familiar with the university, you'd know it sits right along the good ol' Mississippi River) and she asked me to write her a poem. So here it is:

Down by the river
'Neath the St. Cloud skyline
The woman sitting next to me
One day I'd like to make her mine

The day's nearly ending
I don't want it to be done
But, man, it's getting cold outside
Someone should turn up the sun

The night bird's are singing
For me and for her
Ain't that just like life though
How they forget every word

The cloud's have all passed
Still the rain won't let up
And when I'm with you
The whole world seems to stop

The rapids are moving
Fishes swimming downstream
Every day you're with me
Feels like a lifetime in a dream

I can't express to you
The way that I feel
But know that my love
Is both undying and real

I'd really like to add three more stanzas though
"I'm a thief, and I dig it"

  • And you wrote it for her! :) That's awesomely sweet, pearlzepfan. She's gonna love it, for sure! :)

    next stanza:

I wake and I love you
Each day I yearn for your kiss,
I sleep and I dream of you
and a life in pure, sweet bliss

    :)

  • That line would work perfectly, unfortunately I did not write it
    "I'm a thief, and I dig it"
  • That line would work perfectly, unfortunately I did not write it

:) Don't frown!!! :) If you feel it and you like it, use it, my friend!

  • This is what I came up with to finish:

    Down by the river
    Twilight in your eyes
    'Neath the arabian moon
    And the calico skies

In the cold hour of midnight
    When the waters run high
    We have each other now
Let's not let the night pass by

    Your lips soft and sweet
    I will follow your lead
    Down by the river
You are all that I need
    "I'm a thief, and I dig it"
  • Beauty, pearlzepfan!!! So, when ya gonna give it to her? :)
