Afternoon Flight to Venice

The rain, it comes down hard
in wet sheets of white
the sky shatters with blue hot light
another loud crash is moments away
when it hits, you feel fulfilled.
as if, for that moment, everything makes sense
the street below forms an instant river
gum wraps and cig packs sail past my view
a production line of man-made waste.
The already loud, heavy traffic becomes louder, heavier
roaring by, through shin deep water
pulling a Moses on the newly formed river below
refugees from the green park crowd under an overhang
with this wind, it is all a futile attempt to stay dry.
What I thought was bad, is now far worse.
With the river now deeper, I begin to question the sanity of the motorists.
and with lightning this bright, followed by thunder this loud,
I begin to question my own sanity,
for standing this close to the window.
But its the motorists that hold my attention.
Various cars, driven by various people,
fight their way through this, Long Island's newest river.
the SUV's have the upper hand today
confidently trudging through, but cautious still.
Its the smaller cars my heart goes out to.
Late 80's, foreign cars....this is no place for them.
the usually dead asphalt is now alive,
brought to life by ripples,
caused by waves,
caused by cars.
The rotton elements drive the disagreeable types into their homes.
the rain stops.......
leaving me with a relaxingly quiet, flowing stream
I open a bottle of wine....red
and for a moment,
I am in Venice.
