Failing Chemistry

You must know from the way I gaze at you,
deep into your smoky, stone blue eyes
over Wednesday night homework of pi and velocity on an imaginary plane.
Laying back on the warn, itchy blue carpet of your bedroom
you must see the way the light blinds me as it falls on my face.
If you cannot understand what I feel
then I must be failing in more than a class.
Our chemistry has nothing to do with these formulas,
so why is it so hard for you to grasp
when for so long you have been teaching me.
The paper in front of us states,
“THESE EQUATIONS ARE FRICTIONLESS”
and we are too.
Fluidly fitting together
we produce no heat when our words slide by one another
and I casually brush my hand across yours.
As the sun sets behind your windows
it falls away from us at exactly the same speed and angle as always,
reliable, scientifically perfect and precise
like you in so many ways,
it casts shadows into the soft corners of your face,
and I can see you are so confused,
so sure of the wrong answer,
you aren’t even looking at the right question.
As the last evening light falls down over our smudgy paper
and worn down pencils,
I realize
we stopped studying a long time ago.

  • For me, poetry is at its best when it presents you with a familiar topic in a new, unfamiliar way.

I really enjoyed reading your work.
