I lit a candle tonight in honor of the Greatest Artist ever in the World: John Lennon. I came close to tears remembering his astounding influence he had in the World. I wasn't to be born for 11 years, 20 days until after his death, but his influence was so strong that when I got into music, I was hooked. His message still rings on today as strong as it did when "Imagine" was written in 1971. This is the thread to discuss John Lennon and his incredible impact. Where were you and what were you doing when you heard the news? How did it make you feel?

We will always love you John Lennon. The World will always love you.

"We all shine on" - John Lennon

  • He did have some really, really great songs. He penned the best beatle songs, IMO. His work from Revolver on, was exceptional. Paul's songs seem clownish in comparison. I'd say the Beatles would have been mostly hype without Lennon's contribution. He had some gems post-beatles. And he did make some shit songs in his career, too. There are a couple of books about what an asshole Lennon was.

He died in 1980, right? I would have been 1 year old for most of the year so... I wasn't really affected. Hard to say what would have become of him. Dying usually doesn't hurt a stars legacy; you know what I mean. Two songs do have significance for me, however. Imagine and Julia are songs that are very emotional for me and are connected to my daughter. Her name is Julia, after the very song.

They would have been just another Hermann's Hermits without him. And Paul McCartney would have been just another Ronan Keating (Boyzone).
  • I detest John Lennons killer! the world was robbed of someone who gave a fuck and was prepared to use his voice and position to try to make a difference!
When our society crumbles (with any luck) we shall build a new one with 'Imagine' as our template!
He may have been an asshole i doubt i'll ever really know or care but i agree with what he says the world needs and don't need!

    Imagine there's no Heaven
    It's easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us only sky
    Imagine all the people
    Living for today

    Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

    Imagine no possessions
    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    A brotherhood of man
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

  • I agree with you Oil Alternative. The world was robbed. A man in his prime only 40 years old.
I remember the news being broadcast on Radio One followed by the track 'I am the Beat' by the Look. I bought the record and forever hold it in his memory.

No one will ever forget him.

  • John was known as being an asshole the earlier part of his life, but after breaking it off with Cynthia, he looked back onto his life and realized how much of a jerk he was. He began to change by about the White Album era. Just listen to the lyrics on "Jealous Guy" and you'll see what I mean.

Just found a great demo of John working on his song 'She Said, She Said' from the Revolver sessions. This wasn't included in the Beatles Anthology. I don't know where it came from.
