Who agrees that the Mad Season album Above is one of the best side projects/ albums ever? Mike Plays the guitar amazingly and Layne's voice was showcased bigtime! Their concert footage is a great example of how great they really were!!!!

    I love this album.

Too bad Disinformation (the 2nd incarnation with Mark Lanegan) never got off the ground. That would have been something truly special too no doubt

absolutely. i'd not even qualify it as one of the best side projects. it's one of the best albums i've ever heard, period. layne is haunting. mike is inspired. the songs are excellent. it's all around incredible.
    and like that... he's gone.

    fucking brilliant

  • I'm glad the first few agree with me! Wasn't sure if it was just me or not, but the guitar work of Mike sounds like nothing else, and again Layne's voice is so strong and prominent in this album. Anyone heard of any demo boots out there?

November Hotel flat out turns into some serious rockin' after a nice, mellow start! Wake Up is also brilliant!!

Completely agree about Disinformation.....I still hope they eventually work together again; I'm sure it would be nothing short of remarkable.

As for Mad Season, yes, I consider them one of the best side projects ever, right next to TOTD.

Seeing as you are at Miami (OH) I would suggest taking this album and the best dank you can find, head over to the bluffs and listen straight through. At least thats what I did about 12 years ago when I was there......

I'm old enough to have gone there (Miami of Ohio) 16 years ago myself, but never attended college. However, your suggestion has been duly noted and having done similar adventures, it makes me feel like I'm absorbed into the music completely! Nothing better!

Layne's scream in Lifeless Dead seals the deal for me. Definitely one of the best!
Whoa, chill bro... you know you can't raise your voice like that when the lion's here.

Agreed with all post. There is not another song I would love to hear more than Mike do Nov. Hotel at a PJ show. I love this album and I really wish Layne and Mike could have worked together more.

Yeah, I absolutely love this album from start to finish, each song has so much character...

It's so dignified being a one album solo project, but if they were an actual band still on the go (RIP Layne), I would definitely be a devoted fan.

It's cool to hear musicians you're familiar with do different stuff...Mike sounded just as amazing as he did different on this record.

I was also very satisfied with Jeff's 'Tone', which was a huge step away from what he has done in PJ.

  • Wake Up is one of my favourite songs of all time. I really think this album showcases Mike's talent better than any other; his rhythm skills are immense, as well as his lead.

love this band and album although i wouldn't call it a masterpiece. songs like Wake Up, X-Ray Mind, River Of Deceit, I'm Above, Lifeless Dead, Long Gone Day, November Hotel and All Alone are awesome. never could get into I Don't Know Anything or Artificial Red. but that's me.

can't forget their cover of I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier. stunning.

I am lucke enough to have Above on vinyl. Paid $8.99 back in the day at a used record store in Cincinnati. Picked up the Lennon tribute on white vinyl and paid $20 something, but both worth the listen any time. Brilliant musicians doing a brillaint album.

Mirrorball is good as an album done with and influenced by Neil Young who is talented indeed, but there is a huge difference in how the albums make me feel. Mirrorball to me is a happy summer day remembering days past. Mad Season and Above take me to a place deep in the universe where wonders never cease. So dark, intimate, intense, passionate for all invlolved and it blows my mind. Mirrorball is fun listening to, Above takes it to the next level. A masterpiece!!!

i don't disagree at all, but i prefer the mood of mirrorball to above, that's a fucking dark record man. i just love how the band sounds on mirrorball, especially jack.

don't get me wrong, above is the shit.

the versions on Self Polution Radio and Live At The Moore are much better than the studio cut.
