I wish they were doing a show in Perth, instead of a festival.

*insert all negative reasons from the PJ/BDO thread*

I have seen them twice open for pj, at the BDO and by themselves and they were good but their latest album is bad. Not sure I will go to this one. Their first 3 albums were killer though.

Please elaborate on why you think the latest album is bad? Just curious what puts you off it?

I think Revelry, Notion, Cold Desert and Manhattan are all pretty solid songs.

use somebody especially is a song I never thought KOL would make after their first 2 albums.. It's so different to what KOL were about in the early part of their career in a very bad way. They have turned into a top 30 jackie and kyle type band with this album. It's like they have changed complete direction almost a complete new band actually.

Sliverchair and PJ also evolved but they evolved to make better bands and a better sound. I fear we won't ever see the southern lyrnard skynard type, long beards and songs like traini and black thumbnail.

Use Somebody doesn't sound like old KOL but Cold Desert does. That and Closer are probably my favourites off the new album. But I get a little disheartened that they probably wont write songs like Trani and Spiral Staircase anymore.

As for the tour though, Yay!!!!!!

Trani is an older song, but black thumbnail is quite recent (BOTT). There is plenty of material on the new album that rocks, I give them credit for trying new things with OBTN. From what I have heard the new material rocks live too!

Black Thumbnauil is quite new but it has that old KOL feel to it.. I love songs like wasted time, trani, joe's head, slow night, slow long knocked up is good also.. The only songs I like off the new album are manhattan, cold desert and closer.

I see what you're saying Zoso, and I understand that they have gone in a different direction than the last albums, which has its good and bad sides.

Use Somebody is yes, their most radio friendly song to date IMO. And Be Somebody is up there too. I guess KOL are trying new things with their sound as far as this latest album goes, Cold Desert is like the Arizona of BOTT, haunting and lonely, winding down the album...I still think they are keeping their originality with certain tunes, like Closer and Notion. But what is a band who doesnt try new things/sounds? I like the fact that all of their albums has a completely different sounds and feel to it....you never know, the next one could be more like YAYM.

I think the fact that the radio stations have grabbed onto their tunes is why alot of people are getting turned off the new album...ive been in two minds about it really. On one hand im stoked that Kings's name is getting out there and people are more aware of the great music that they put out, but yeah - on the other hand you worry that they will swing to mainstream teen rock and only put music out that they think will sell them the most records.

  • i agree that their new album is their weakest. still some great songs on it. i really like 'use somebody' its poppy, but still KOL.

im also hoping that the fact that they put it out in basiacally a year (while touring etc) means that they still have more good stuff to give...

coming from someone that took awhile to warm to them, my fave album isn't the latest, but by no means i think it's weak :)

Unless they drastically change their ways with the live sets, don't bother going to see them twice.

Thanks catefrances, & the OP :)
The new album hasn't quite grabbed me yet, but they were great last time & I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be again.

That's like $1.18 per minute! plus the service charges.

I thought is was bad that I had to pay $45

I agree with Zoso on this one.
