  • in what screwed up universe is Liam Gallagher the coolest lead singer? i'm gonna remedy this
  • NME is crap anyways. Their polls and lists are absolutely ridiculous and completely biased towards English music. Jim Morrison is the best frontman by the way.

    Jack White?! yeah ok...

Cool to see Jello Biafra on there, even if no one is voting for him. I gave my vote to Ian MacKaye.

The NME is tragic these days.

Oh, NME. In what world is the dude from Oasis ahead of, well, anyone? While I have a soft spot for the Ian Curtis and Morrisey's of the world, i think it's hard to beat Robert Plant.
  • Joe Strummer.
Can not be arsed with life no more.
  • Where's CC and Layne? I started hitting repeats before I came across either of them..

Not saying they are the best, but I did see several extremely stupid names on the list.

patton is cool but he's only a gadget, can't compare to a Staley, Cornell, Biafra, Vedder, Morisson, Gahan and all the others well knows amazing frontman
  • I would like to hear Patton's opinion of Cornell's new stuff :)

I remember him absolutely ravaging Audioslave, System of a Down, Foo Fighters, Wolfmother, etc.

I like FNM and some of Patton's other stuff but it's always hit and miss for me because I think he tries so hard not to be mainstream... whatever that means.
  • Wow, that list was fucking retarded. It just made me really angry, I HATE the current British music scene. You just had to look at the expressions on their faces to see that they don't have a fucking clue about musicianship or anything close to it. And, as previously mentioned, where the hell were Cornell and Staley?

I've never bought it since it has been bollocks since I started listening to music but from what I gather, in the 70s and 80s it was fairly progressive and had a high standard of journalism. Articles I've read from the 80s are unrecognisable as NME writing.

  • patton opinion would be that it's shit, but patton did is own Scream with peeping tom, which was a lo fi Scream Cornell album haha, and his next project Crudo is even worse, so ...

patton is over since a long time now, he made good stuff with Mr Bungle, Fnm & Fantomas but now he's long gone, you need to let him fly alone, plus with Zorn he only imitate Yamantaka Eye.

At least Cornell doesn't talk shit about every band around & he's less a self indulgent prick than patton (even with his stupid 'this is my dark side of the moon'), Patton opinion sucks, King Buzzo from the Melvins is funnier

Peeping Tom was hardly mainstream pop, it was Patton's take on pop. I can't see Timbaland or Cornell getting Norah Jones to say "motherfucker" on one of their songs.

Anyway, Patton was a better frontman when he sang rather than yelped. Yes, you have a very impressive voice Mike. Now write some good songs again.

As for imitating Eye when he worked with John Zorn, that's really all Zorn wanted from him.

Fair enough, at least in the time I've been reading it (since the mid 90's) it's always been written by pretentious pricks who build bands up then knock them down the minute they get even a smidgen of success.
  • Norah Jones says motherfucker, big deal.

the problem isn't to be mainstream or not, it's just a bunch of stupid lyrics and gimmicks in a pop format, Mojo lyrics are as stupid as any Ground zero Cornell song + make so many dull songs with amazing collaborators like Odd Nosdam, Massive Attack, the automator and some Anticon guys is a really tour de force

that's why i think patton isn't in position to talk shit about Scream, let's says that these 2 guys share the same midlife crisis, but Cornell wear it with a little more class (no i'm not from the dull street team ha)

My point is that a quirky, offbeat pop album released on Tzadik records with a multi-million selling adult contemporary artist singing "motherfucker" over a sexy lounge jazz style song seems less like a sell out move and more like a misguided attempt to again cover musical ground that the artist hasn't done already. I don't like the Peeping Tom album but I don't feel like the intention behind it is particularly worthy of contempt. I listen to a lot of noise/experimental music and one thing's for sure, Patton is at his best when he stays the fuck away from it, so a pop album wasn't such a bad idea. I do agree that he really failed to capitalise on the wealth of talent that appeared on it though.

I am less convinced that this is a sincere effort from Cornell to break new ground.

How is Jeff Buckley a front man?
What the fuck is this world?
  • We agree on some points, but i don't judge the degree of sell out or sincerity, who knows ? Cause it's more mainstream it's less sincere ?

Maybe both (PT & Scream) are just kind of failed sincere projects, they wanted to make their own vision of modern pop, these guys have money, Cornell got the TOTD Audioslave Soundgarden & others royalties, a Hype restaurant in Paris etc, Patton got a label, and lots of bands royalties, i dont think these guys needs to sell out, it's maybe just a need to try some really poppy things

but at the end of the day, there's a pretentious touch in peeping tom gimmicks that bother me more that in the peeping cornell leaks, and on a pure musical level, Mojo, Celebrity death match or Kill the dj aren't better that Scream (the song) , the difference is that even the vocals are dull on PT, at least Cornell vocals are back and 2 drinks minimum is awesome

There's also the shitty poppy maynard record, V for Vagina, same problem haha, where's Pharrell Williams when you need him ?

you're right (again) Jez, NME was ok a while back, but not now :( It's a stinking filthy 'what's hot and what's not' rag, and the fact that Liam bloody Gallgher is top of their poll simply underlines what a lot of bog paper it is. Liam Gallagher has the singing ability of a hoarse, out of tune, son of an Irish alcoholic. And the charisma of a cow pat....unbelievable the amount of attention he's drawn over the years. Once again.....he should kiss Noels feet every night before bed time and say a thousand thank yous.

btw, the answer is Robert Plant, or Jim Morrison, or Bon Scott...maybe even W Axl Rose, or even Sebastian Bach, but not never, ever in a million trillion years of shittiness is it Liam bastard Gallagher.
    I came, I saw, I concurred.....
  • My vote goes to Gord Downie.

And I'm gonna defend Liam. At a concert he was sorta sectioned off from the crowd, but in the area, while Noel was singing 'Don't Look Back In Anger'... I made Eye contact with him, stuck my hand out (I was 10 ft away), and he waved me over. I shook his hand, said 'Good show!' and he said 'Thank you' and I walked away. He was cool about it, he coulda said fuck off, or ignored me, but he was nice about it.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
  • Peeping Tom is awesome.

Everyone who claims otherwise is an ass.

And anyone who disagrees with my disagreement is a double ass (you heard me correctly! that's 4 cheeks!)
