If we're talking technical skills there are plenty of jazz, etc players who coupld mop the floor with these guys. If we're talking sloppy emotion these guys don't come close. Maybe cheesy emotion and a dated style of playing.

Rush have always been one of my favorite bands. They are one of the main reasons music is such an important part of my life. No doubt each member is extremely talented -- a big part beyond that which makes them unique is their chemistry between one another. In the studio and on the stage, their professional approach to the business and their fans is as unique as their musical ability. The guys are humble, down-to-earth people...just like the guys in Pearl Jam.
I agree, Rush is one of the best. I used to despise Geddy Lee's voice and never gave them a chance. Then a friend of mine asked me to go see them live this summer, so we went. I was FLOORED! Simply amazing, all very talented. Definitely one of the most technically gifted. On a real funny note, check out this youtube video of Rush failing their own song, Tom Sawyer, on Rock Band. Kinda funny.
I would agree that Rush is a band comprised of very good technical players. But are they the best? Hell no.
As someone else pointed out, if you want true technical mastery, look to jazz. There are so many jazz artists that are not well known to the public that are just incredible technical players. Rush is good. But they don't even compare to many artists out there.
Primus has more talent than Rush imo...there are others too. Pantera, Radiohead, Tool, etc.

Neil Peart? ehh... Every drummer goes through their neil peart phase, then they get over it for the msot part. I find alot of NP's drumming predictable. Its alot of [insert fast drum fill around all toms] here. Tim Alexander was more creative.
Plus Neil Peart looks look like a constipated cancer patient playing. It looks like he has so much trouble playing what he does.

I spoke to John Hanes, a good drummer himself and the conversation drifted towards Matt's incredible drumming.

I've been following them since Hemispheres and saw them for the first time on the GRACE UNDER PRESSURE tour and seen them 30+ times since. I can't get enough of them live as they get ready to release Snakes & Arrows Live on DVD soon.
Also they've released some of the best album covers ever too love the simple intensity of the cover of *Hold Your Fire*

well my dad was a professional drummer( jazz/big band/swing) and got kinda offended when I said peart then bonham where the best out there. Until he listened to both. He agreed that they were both incredible players.

That is some good jazz drumming. But just like for him and also matt cameron, no rock drummer who plays jazz also is as good as a real jazz drummer.
