As a diehard Vervie, I have to say I am very impressed :o):O):O) I heard some of the songs when I went to the recent shows but they're so much better on the album. I do have to say though that I can REALLY see the difference between the songs written by the verve and the songs written by Richard ashcroft. The verve songs are much more in depth whereas the richard songs sound like they should be on his next album. but still...im not complaining :o) I loveeee Columbo.

i'd say it's a workmanlike album (hear someone use that term in another thread and like it). it's not mind-blowing like their previous three all were. but any band would be pretty hard pressed to top that kind of output (only pearl jam following ten-vs-vitalogy with no code comes to mind), and given there's a 10 year gap between urban hymns and the new one, it's a decent comeback. i've been on a huge verve kick lately. they'd lain dormant in my mind for a while, but i recently got hooked again somehow and have been listening to their ep and northern soul non-stop recently.

anyway, like i said, the new one didn't blow me away, but i don't think there's a bad song on there. i was happy to see a bit more psychedelia in the mix this time around. it's pretty clear how badly richard needed nick to truly shine. his guitar-playing is what made this band. i like to think this album is kind of shaking off the cobwebs. the talent's still there, but the fiery passion of the early stuff isn't. i think if they can hold it together, their next album might really be something.
    and like that... he's gone.

I agree, especially with the firey passion part and mainly chalking that up to Richard. Urban Hymns was good but no where near as good as northern soul and storm in heaven and I think this album is much closer to their first album. northern soul, in my opinion was the best and forth does not quite reach it. definitely clearing the cobwebs on this one.
So I was thinking though, you really have to respect what they put out there in forth. when I go to verve shows, like with most bands, most of the audience only knows the poppy songs which generally came off hymns and so I was thinking..this album is much more along the jamming lines of storm in heaven and northern soul, save the very richardy songs like I see houses.
the whole album is 90 ish minutes and theres only 10 songs. Very jammey indeed.
And so true..richard is nothing without the band especially mccabe. Si Jones..respect for him too. He is a great bassist. I mean, he's no entwistle but his talent is really evident on the b-sides and rarities. they're probably coming back to the states in the beginning of 09...should all check it out. very fun!

    Valium Skies is painfully bad.

    It's terrible.

I've never really been a fan of theirs and this confirms it for me.

I find their attitude poor and their music worse...
