Watch it from 3:10 to the end if you don't want to watch the whole thing.

Yeah this looks awesome. When's it coming out??
"A consistently good band works all the different elements well. A song has to appeal sentimentally, intellectually, physically, viscerally, and dig deep down into your soul and suck you into it. And after that, of course, it'd be a matter of taste." ~ Kim Thayil from Soundgarden

Nothing against the Black Keys who I really like (and will be seeing next month in Raleigh) but there's really no comparison. Jack White can play circles around most musicians in his age group. He's very well respected in guitar circles. Here's a video from the Grammy's from a few years back.

jack white and the white stripes are the most overhyped, overrated, and unreasonably ass-kissed band since radiohead.

that solo might have made techs cream their shorts, but it didn't sound all that fantastic to me, hell didn't sound like anything the dude from rage hasn't done before. just because jack white is weirder than hell doesn't mean he's a genius. to me, jack white is the same as john mayer. both may be talented guitar players, but they both have annoying voices and crappy songs. one is just more pop/mainstream and the other is more weird/indie. same outcome. these guys should join a band together, hire someone to sing for them, and get a bassist that can write good songs. then i'd be all over it ;)
    and like that... he's gone.
  • jack white's lyric writing ability is incredible. one of the best ever.

Except he learned everything he knows from John McGeoch, so you're wrong. That removes the claim for originality, now what does he have going for him? Just the 2 note delay thing then...

    good ole irish soul ;)

  • I'm not that big of a fan of Edge (Note that I do think that he is good) but Jimmy Page..well..he is Jimmy Page... But Jack White..he is a fucking living legend! He absolutely is up in the ranks of the best that has ever lived. Noone can do what he is doing right now.

The reason critics love the White Stripes so much is because they were a complete breath of fresh air when they arrived, and even now no one else sounds like them (save for the Black Keys, who have some good songs, but aren't as original and creative as the Stripes). I don't love the White Stripes, but they can make some amazing songs when they really try. A lot of their weirder stuff is hit or miss, sure, but just because you don't like it doesn't mean they're overhyped or overrated or whatever you believe they are.

You gotta credit Jack White as an original guitar player though even if you don't like his style. Personal taste I guess.

  • naysayers: go watch jack white play. not with the raconteurs. on his own or with the white stripes. get up front.

    then let's talk.

And regarding the documentary, putting three guitar players in the same room with no bass or percussion and just saying "ok, do your thing" isn't going to be great footage. I remember seeing something like that with John Mayer, Derek Trucks, and John Frusciante and it was boring. They didn't know what to do.

Indeed, that's a much better version of Death Letter. I don't know if anything tops the White Stripes lilve for me. The Raconteurs are good live but it's not on the same level in my opinion.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

Jimmy Page and Edge? Jack White? are you kidding. I think the main idea was reunite 3 generations of rock.

i'd prefer: Page+ Slash + Mccready or Frusciante.

Stupid me. I had a chance to select this flim at the Toronto International Film Festival, and I passed. I had no clue Jimmy and Jack would be there at the time. Argh
