who thinks Jack White (and The White Stripes in general) is very overrated? He has some good stuff but I don't understand why there are people who just worship him and think everything he does is good. Sometimes it's really boring.

I heard his new duet with Alicia Keys today and I think it sucks. Very boring. Doesn't really go anywhere. I mean I wouldn't have such a problem, except this song's being used in a James Bond movie. It seems like it's being chosen purely for the fact that Jack White is constantly overhyped and overrated.
I pledge to you a government that will not only work well, but wisely, its ability to act tempered by prudence, and its willingness to do good, balanced by the knowledge that government is never more dangerous than when our desire to have it help us blinds us to its great power to harm us.

    you're not the only one...........

I'm done with the white stripes after the last album.........I can't believe any record company would want to tie their name to that album...........

and yes the song with alicia keys does suck big hairy balls
  • I'm sure you're not the only one, but I massively disagree. I think Jack White is great. When I first heard Fell In Love With a Girl, I didn't see what the big deal was. That song did nothing for me. Then I saw their week long stand on Conan O'Brien and I got it. The White Stripes are a band that bring spontinaeity and intensity back to rock n roll. THey carry the blues influence and tight but loose grooves of Zeppelin and the Stones to a new generation without being a carbon copy of the great classic rock bands. De Stijl, Elephant and Icky Thump are great, great albums. Full of great riffs and tons of soul. There is very little like what the White Stripes have to offer in modern rock.

But why do they have the bass drum sound like hitting wet cardboard half the time?? Argh that pisses me off to no end!!!
  • No, you're not the only one. I have never been a fan myself, although I am quite a big fan of the raconteurs. (My friends can't understand how I can dislike the white stripes but like the raconteurs.)

I personally dont like anything ive heard by them but rating is in the ears of the listener.
People say im paranoid. Well, they dont say it, but i know that's what they are thinking.
  • I like some songs but in general find them very overated.

And cate is it not The White Keys collaboration? haha. Yes I am a dork.

I've never been too impressed, either. I can't quite get used to his voice, though I will say that the guitar playing is quite good. And they are one of the few bands that has covered Captain Beefheart tunes. That's got to count for something...

I think Jack White is up there with only another handful of people in the last years as the most talented musicians.

His riffs remind me of Zeppelin.

    I
    just
    love
    him

He has the same perfectionism as Jimmy Page when it comes to studio and live shows, but he is all around more creative.

    Sorry :o

I don't rate Mr White at all.

I think he´s talented but don´t think he´s yet written that one big song everyone will remember him for. Hopefully it´ll come eventually, he´s a great guitarist when he wants to be.

i agree.. a product of the indie hype machine. jack white has his moments, but overall the white stripes were very repetitive, and the raconteurs are a very good band, but not a great one

See, personally I feel like he doesn't have it in him to do that.

  • The albums that the stripes put out up to now are classics. I hope Jack leaves the stripes and uses the Racs as his new outlet. They are a great modern rock band. I like everything Jack does. He has that spirit of the old days in him.

Seven Nation Army is a great song. If there was one song he should be remembered for it's that one.

I love the 2nd 3rd and 4th WS albums and both the Raconteurs albums. The other WS albums have their moments but aren't really great.

Live, he can't sing for shit and that's why he'll never be a great frontman

a lot of folk dont rate him.. they are entitled to that opinion.. its wrong.. but they 're entitled to it nonetheless :)
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

Wait, Jimmy or Jack, who's more creative. If you are speaking of Jack being more so than Jimmy... well, you're wrong. :o

I do love Seven Nation Army and got Get Behind Me Satan on the cheap, but that's about it for me. No, I don't get the hype. But then, I only have/need one Radiohead album too. :)
  • You're not the only one, no.

But I happen to think there's a whole lot of talent, depth, passion, creativity, and an atmosphere of history and tradition in every aspect of White's work. I'm profoundly grateful to have discovered The White Stripes a long time ago, and more recently The Raconteurs. And I'm profoundly grateful that I got to witness Jack's onstage talent and charisma yet again last night. It will never get old for me. There's a spirit and a soulfulness there that is indescribable. There's something about the way he performs that has me completely hooked, and something about the songs that he writes that make me want to dissect every note and every word. I can't stop playing those records. And I love that old-fashioned sort of vibe that he has. Very cool. That's only my opinion, of course. Sorry to gush a little much, but this is why it's up there with Pearl Jam for me.

I understand that it's not for everyone. that's okay, because the less people feel the way I do, the better chance I have of being on the rail at every show. ;)

Jimmy Page was a painter. What else does White do?

  • I think Jack is absolutley amazing in EVERYTHING he does. The White Stripes are amazing, and I think the Raconteurs are even better.

And I saw the Stripes from the second row last year, you could feel the energuy coming off that stage, holy shit.

  • If you are in a band, play the riff to "7 Nation Army" at your next gig or party and see how many people love it. It may not do well with the over 30 crowd but, the youngsters love it!
