you know - like that crappy "band out of Boston" who spent 7 years making their first album (which I never liked, anyway) and could never quite recapture the magic...

My list (if you couldn't tell, I'm a bit trapped in the past):

Black Crowes
Blue Oyster Cult
Big Audio Dynamite
B-52's
Cars
Tracy Chapman
Concrete Blonde
Del Fuegos
Gin Blossoms
Go Go's
Marshall Tucker Band
Pretenders
Pure Prarie League
Scruffy the Cat
Steely Dan
Stephen Stills
George Thorogood and the Destroyers

and, some might say (not me), Pearl Jam :D.
If I had known then what I know now...

Vegas 93, Vegas 98, Vegas 00 (10 year show), Vegas 03, Vegas 06
VIC 07
EV LA1 08
Seattle1 09, Seattle2 09, Salt Lake 09, LA4 09
Columbus 10
EV LA 11
Vancouver 11
Missoula 12
Portland 13, Spokane 13

Yeah the media would put Pearl Jam on that list. But it isn't that much of a peak, I would say most of their career has been like a plateau maybe with little drops, but no valleys.

Hot Hot Heat...so much fun that band. :)

If by peaked you are saying what is their strongest album? I couldn't tell what you meant. But if that is the case Murmur from REM will always remain their best work in my mind.

I couldn't disagree more with this one. Southern Harmony will always be their first album to me. As to their best I would have to go with either Amorica or Southern Harmony, with Three Snakes sneaking in now and again. Shake Your Moneymaker really didn't showcase the talent and skill along with the jams that the Robinson Bros. have continued to produce.IMHO :)

Yeah - their best, in your opinion. Not sales. Often, a crappy 2nd (or 3rd) album will just sell on what preceded it. Hell, I think I bought EVERY Black Crowes album, hoping for another "Shake Your Money Maker."

P.S. I'm NOT waiting for another "Ten." They're all great in their own way (even Riot Act:D)!

I'd say The Doors. The rest of their catalogue is by no means bad. I pretty much love it all except the Soft Parade.
But I still think the debut was their best work. And therefore their peak.

Totally disagree with The Black Crowes. Southern Harmony and Amorica are the peak for them. So far.

I think a lot of people would say Van Halen. I would say Fair Warning though.

Interesting... yeah, SHMC definitely had its moments but still...

I should probably give them ALL another listen. I think "Lions" got all of about ONE play. It was shit though, wasn't it :D?

i DEFINITELY dont love the rest of their work. makeup the breakdown was 33 minutes of awesomeness, that nobody at the time was sounding like. the last two albums have been meh. saw them in 03 and have seen them every year since, and they just cant recapture that vibe from the first album.....sorry !!!

Oh no, I would never say such a thing.
I LOVE them. Always will. I have such fond memories related to their music.
Just saying I think Murmur was their finest work. The rest is magnificent. Just that is my favorite.

This the best example. On my two disc greatest hits it has 8 of the 11 tracks on it and the 3 they left out are great songs.

Its the only Doors CD I own thats not a compilation and I don't really feel the need for any of the other except maybe LA Women.

yeah that's just crazy talk, like Bleach is cool and all but like Nevermind is sick and in utero is my favorite album of the decade give or take a Pavement cd

Maybe you are confused, a lot of people think Nevermind was their first album, I personally dont like Nirvana, but I think In utero is their best.

Arcade Fire and Portishead have only released 2 albums each. Just because you like the first albums better do not mean they've peaked yet. The new Portishead drops in April so if you don't like that as much as Dummy then your statement is more accurate.
