With how much emphasis is put on albums like Sgt. Peppers, Dark Side of the Moon, etc., what are the overlooked albums by some of the big bands that you treasure and maybe even like better than the standard classics?

For me:

The Beatles - White Album (not Sgt. Peppers)
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (not Dark Side of the Moon)
Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy (not Led Zep IV)
The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers (not Exile on Main Street)
The Doors - Morrison Hotel (not self-titled debut)
Jimi Hendrix - Axis: Bold As Love (not Are You Experienced?)
The Velvet Underground - Self-Titled 3rd Album (not The VU & Nico)
Rush - Fly By Night (not Moving Pictures)
Neil Young - On The Beach (not Harvest)
U2 - Achtung, Baby (not The Joshua Tree)
Radiohead - The Bends (not OK Computer)
Pearl Jam - Vitalogy (not Ten)
Nirvana - In Utero (not Nevermind)
Stone Temple Pilots - Purple (not Core)
Alice in Chains - Jar of Flies (not Dirt)
R.E.M. - Monster (not Document)
Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead (not American Beauty)
Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual (not Nothing's Shocking)

  • Devils and Dust - Bruce Springsteen (I prefer this to Nebraska)

These Days - Bon Jovi (the only album I like by them)

Riot Act - Pearl Jam ( I prefer this to Ten)

Meat Is Murder - The Smiths (often overlooked)

I find it tough to call The White Album "overlooked" ... but, I think I get what you're getting at ...

    a few for me ...

Black Sabbath - The Mob Rules (not Paranoid)
Faith No More - King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime (not The Real Thing)
The Who - Quadrophenia (not Tommy)
The Clash - Give 'em Enough Rope (not London Calling)
The Cult - Love (not Sonic Temple)
Aerosmith - Aerosmith (not, whatever people consider their most popular album)

and I completely agree with ...

Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy (not Led Zeppelin IV)

... any album with Song Remains the Same and No Quarter on it is a masterpiece right there.

Agree with pretty much everything said, esp. Wish You Were Here (not Dark Side of the Moon) and about Morrison Hotel.

    I'll add:

Soundgarden - Down On The Upside (not Superunknown)
Pearl Jam - Yield (not Ten or Vs)
Depeche Mode - Black Celebration (not Violator)
INXS - Welcome To Wherever You Are (not Kick)
AC/DC - For Those About To Rock (not Back In Black)
Aerosmith - Get Your Wings; Rocks (not Toys in the Attic I guess?)
The Police - Zenyatta Mondatta (not Synchronicity)
I am lost, I'm no guide. But I'm by your side...

Hasn't every PJ album since Vitalogy been over looked except by the fans?
