NWA obviously, The Police are one of the most overrated bands and I dont really see what all the fuss is about lately. I could care less that they are back together for another tour and I am surprised that so many people care as much as they do.

  • Call me when Sting writes "Fuck the NWA." But for real, Straight Outta Compton is an incredible album - its influence was immediate and sweeping, and can still be felt today.

Even after Cube left and the subsequent records became less about social/political commentary and more about typical "gangsta" fare, Dre's level of production advanced to a point of jaw-dropping perfection!

The Police wrote some great songs, but there's no Straight Outta Compton and no groundbreaking musical advances in their catalog.

Statements like this just indicate that you need to listen to a lot more of the Police. They were ENTIRELY groundbreaking.

They were groundbreaking in terms of the mixture of musical genres, so my statement stands corrected in its literal sense. I should have been more clear...I was referring to Dre's production changing EVERYTHING about the way rap records were produced and the lyrics on Straight Outta Compton changing everything (really, everything). The Police influenced plenty of artists, but they didn't change the landscape of an entire genre, providing the catalyst in that genre and the sub-culture it's associated with in becoming one of the largest in the world.

So, The Police...groundbreaking? Yes. World changing? Not so much.

The Police!!!!! If I want to listen to "world changing" rap music, I'll cue up some Public Enemy or Ice-T.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.

That coming from an oasis fan?
    Talk about overrated
were the police overrated before they went on tour? NO
the tour is over hyped, but the band is the real deal

The police were one of the first bands to take the ska/punk influence to a new level, and created a bunch of great records, including on or two masterpieces

NWA pioneered ganster rap, but they broke up before they had a chance to truly be great, kinda like guns n roses.

Truth be told, although P.E. and Ice-T were influential, NWA reallty CHANGED rap music. They created a whole new genre of disrespecting hoes, busting gats, and smoking weed. Give credit where credit is due.

While I don't disrespect hoes, bust gats or smoke weed.....so I simply don't care about people who do or people who glorify it.

The Police. NWA were hugely influential on rap, and I respect what they did, but we are asking personal preference. I would think the Police did start a genre - reggae infused with punk, early ska - defintely an inspiration to Sublime, Big Sugar and the like.

Could look at that and say the same about The Clash...punk infused with reggae and ska (among other things). Both debuted in 1977. In either case, they were one of the pioneers of a sound...but you can't just look back at any craters in history and say, "Wow, The Police did that!" NWA pelted the musical landscape and left it looking like the moon. NWA captivated a nation - not just its fans.

The Police made music for dorky Baby Boomers and geek Gen X'rs who think they're cool. Do Do Do, Da Da Da or Fuck The Police... that's a tough decision!!
