Hello... well, I realised that after going through my music collection.. aside from Pearl Jam.. I don't have much... mainly cos I can't stand anything you hear on the radio, and I don't have much time to look for new and exciting bands...

So--- seeing as we are a great community of music lovers, I was wondering if there were some bands anyone could turn me onto... especially groups outside of Canada, and the US.

Also--- if anyone is looking for some Canadian bands to get into that they might have not heard--- I know some of you know them--- but they aren't exactly mainstream worldwide... may I suggest

Matthew Good and Matthew Good Band
I Mother Earth- before they lost Edwin- especially Scenery and Fish
the Tea Party
Moist
the Tragically Hip
Big Sugar
and K-Os

thanks for your help and looking forward to discovering some new music- for me anyways.
i only own my mind- i am mine.

Alcest - Souvenirs D'Un Autre Monde

This is my favorite cd to come out this year. They are French (pretty obvious huh?) and this is a 2 piece outfit though the main player is Neige. They traditionally play more along the lines of Black Metal in other various bands however don't let that fool you. There is NOTHING metal about this release. However if you are familiar with BM you can see where they are coming from.

If you enjoy shoegaze, bands like My Bloody Valentine, Jesu, Mogwai etc... you would be making a big mistake by not checking this out.

Here is a short article with the song Les Iris linked at the end. This CD is absolutely beautiful that could be enjoyed by anybody.

  • I share in your disdain for new music. 99% of it is pretty awful. I'll give you 3 relatively new bands that I really like.

    The Hymns
    The Redwalls
    The Polyphonic Spree
    one foot in the door
the other foot in the gutter
    sweet smell that they adore
    I think I'd rather smother
    -The Replacements-
  • You should definitely check out Fugazi from Washington, D.C. They're considered by many people to be the most influential band of the past 20 years. I'd recommend getting their albums Repeater +3 Songs, Red Medicine or End Hits as a starting point.

    here's some awesome live videos
