Is there any dignified way of saying "Oh hells yeah"? I'm guessing not.
That's very dignified, indeed.
Despite the frat boy-esque videos that they're putting out all month, musically I think the boys have grown up quite nicely. This album is very reflective and mature. The durty southern rock is great but so is the grander and fleshier adult sound.

Sounds like these will wash well in arenas.
After one listen through, the only songs that stand out as "not quite there" are 17 and I Want You. The rest of the album pretty much builds on the best parts of BOTT, although it does seem a little less experimental. Still an excellent album, of course. From Closer to Revelry is a great run of songs, and Cold Desert might actually top Arizona.
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

I completely agree with you on "17" and "Cold Desert" is scary good...the fade out and in is brilliant. It gives me the same chill that "Arizona" did although I think that nothing will top the chill of "Arizona" for me.
Some songs just take you there and good for them that they've got one of those songs on both albums.
In a weird way, this album actually does kinda go back to their roots. There are certain elements to it which sound very Southern Rockish, specifically Closer, Crawl, Revelry, Notion, I Want You, Be Somebody, and Cold Desert. I think it's a pretty good album.
Here are my few complaints:
- Caleb's vocals sound very similar on every song, high pitch and high volume. They also sound very poppish and cheesy on a few songs, it's almost like he forgot how to rock.
- Some songs, like I Want You and Cold Desert, seem to have a lot of potential but never actually go anywhere. I keep feeling like something big is coming but it never does. It's like they set it all up to rock out but just don't.
- Almost every song seems to have the same tempo and similar drum pattern.
- There's not really any section of the album where they're really rocking as hard as they can. BOTT seemed to have a lot of sections where they just rocked, HARD, like the chorus in Black Thumbnail. There's no part of this album that gets to that level.
I pledge to you a government that will not only work well, but wisely, its ability to act tempered by prudence, and its willingness to do good, balanced by the knowledge that government is never more dangerous than when our desire to have it help us blinds us to its great power to harm us.

Its funny that I consider these to be all good things. I feel the album is put together nicely and don't mind them not rocking out to their fullest because I know that they'll continue to play their other songs live that do just that.
I like that they didn't force a hard rock out session if that's not what they wanted to do this time out. BOTT is my favorite album in years, but this one is great as well and I'm happy with the finished product.

There's something about this album that leaves me feeling unsatisfied. BOTT was just perfect. It has the perfect balance of mellow and hard. This one seems.. empty.

Heres the weird thing... I can see someone feeling that way, yet I don't. This album reminds me of Beck's Modern Guilt because I feel I REALLY like each album and am making me so excited to see each band live, but I can see how others would be disappointed. Unlike my favorites from Beck and KoL, which I can't see any fan of either band disliking.
I don't know about you guys & girls but I hear a big drop-off in quality after the 5th song ... and somehow they forgot to rock?! It seems to be their "soul" record.
I can't find the link on that page. Where can I download it?

Half way through this record and it sounds pretty much like what I expected it would. This album could be the one that really puts them on the map so the radio friendly edge makes a lot of sense.
Hope the next one rocks a little harder but this should age really nicely. I'm satisfied so far.
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

thx.
just finished listening to it... it's a solid album, though I agree about "17" not being so great.

I don't mean now.
I simply meant music released on that consistant of a
basis, allows more room to experiment.
