For about 10 years, the rock band Candlebox had disappeared from the music scene, fading into obscurity like so many other bands from the mid-to-late 1990s. But Saturday night at the Ricochet night club in Fort Myers, Candlebox frontman Kevin Martin and company showed that they have returned.

And they have returned with a spark, on the heels of their latest CD release, "Into the Sun."

Candlebox, formed in Seattle in 1991 during the infancy of the grunge music movement, never really sounded like bands-of-the-hour Nirvana, Alice in Chains or Soundgarden.

The band, now comprised of five members - Martin, guitarist Peter Klett, bass guitarist Adam Kury, drummer Scott Mercado and guitarist Sean Hennessey - carries more of a modern Led Zeppelin sound.

Kury and Hennessey also play for King's Royal, which opened the show along with the Ohio-based Small Town Sleepers.

Candlebox then played 16 songs for more than 90 minutes, with all of the tracks coming from their first and most recent CDs.

They opened with "Don't You." And for awhile, they alternated new songs with old ones - although newcomers probably wouldn't have noticed the difference.

Although the band's sound has remained the same, some of the newer tracks - especially "Breathe" - contained Zeppelinesque qualities.

If the beginning of "Breathe" sounds like Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter," it's not just a coincidence, Martin said.

"We love Led Zeppelin," said Martin, who also cited Pink Floyd and Bob Marley as influences on the latest CD.

Martin, a fit 39, dominated the show from start to finish. He wore dark jeans and a vest over a T-shirt with what appeared to be the image of singer Amy Winehouse on the front. He worked the crowd throughout the night, even climbing on top of the stack of amplifiers at one point.

Standout songs included "Change," "Arrow," "You" and "Far Behind," which closed the set.

Martin's stage antics remain unique to rock and roll - he has a knack for delivering one-finger and two-unprintable word salutes that are amusing instead of insulting. But his vocals and ability to inject energy into the crowd also remain unique.

Candlebox returned for a two-song encore - "Cover Me" and "Rain," which starts out like a slow blues song and then crescendos into an all-out jam.

Candlebox began its comeback last year, also stopping at Ricochet. Here's hoping they return again in 2009.

    Ft. Lauderdale show was better...;)
    Conversations getting dull
There's a constant ringing in my ears
Sense of humor's void and numb
    And I'm bored to tears.......
