Out of all the bands of the late 90's, this band has really pushed themselves musically. I think Brandon Boyd is a great lyricist. Can't wait for a new cd by this group. I have to say, glass is one of my favorite songs ever. Sick Sad little world is also a great tune. What are your thoughts?

  • I like S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
  • one of the first bands i ever got into. i really love science, and they still put out good tunes. seen 'em 4 times and they always put on a good show
    MSG II 6/25/08
  • Light Grenades was god awful, and I'm afraid this band has JUMPED THE SHARK.

Lil Wayne is better than Pearl Jam.

  • light grenades was not their best, i agree. still, there was some brilliance in that album. I loved a kiss to send us off, dig, and rogues. I don't think they have jumped the shark by any means. I think after taking a good break, they will come back better that ever. One thing is for sure, they always have a different sound on everyone of their albums. They are similar to pearl jam in that they don't want to make the same album over and over again.
  • S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and Morning View are my favourites. Mike Einziger is an outrageously underrated guitarist.

They jumped the shark when they lost their old bassist, Dirk Lance. That guy was a beast.

  • great band except for light grenades, i thought the instumentals on the Look Alive CD were really cool.
Down in the hole, Jesus tries to crack a smile beneath another shovel load.

Dirk did shit for the band. Mike Einziger even said that he wrote the majority of the basslines... Ben Kenney is so much more fucking talented... not only do you have him adding in nice grooves, but he has a solo project that's just him... on his albums, he plays guitar, bass, drums, and sings... and he's on a solo tour right now... and during the 2004 live shows, Ben Kenney would have a little drum off with Jose... how fucking cool is that?

Anyway.. Incubus is my favorite band and I loved Light Grenades. I really like what they've done... and they have progressed a lot since their older days... they usually always switch up their sound on every album. ACLOTM was extremely experimental, and Light Grenades just seems really straightforward rock.

With that said, Mikey just composed his symphony two weeks ago... Mike's going to Harvard for one semester to study composition while Brandon's going to some California college to study art... Ben's doing his tour, Kilmore's getting high, Jose's raising his son... so, we'll probably see a new album by 2010.
If I could, think I would give in.
  • morning view and crow were their crowning moments. I've also seen them four times, all great except this last one in vancouver for light grenades, it wasnt a great show, just like it wasnt a great record.

anybody hear eizinger's orchestra piece? its weird, but cool, for what it is.

and ben kenney is touring solo right now, as mentioned:

  • Yeah, I thought Mike did a fantastic job on the orchestral piece. I mean, I don't really know how to pick it apart like people that know all that shit, but from just a standard listener of music, I really enjoyed it... thought it was a really good first attempt at writing a symphony. I really loved the use of typewriters...

And getting my Ben Kenney tix tomorrow for Pittsburgh... whoop whoop!
If I could, think I would give in.

Completely agree about Ben. I think he's a much better bassist than Dirk, and as you point out, a much more talented musician overall.

Incubus is one of the few bands who continues to try to grow. A lot of people on here pine for the days of S.C.I.E.N.C.E., and while it's a good album, I don't think it's nearly as good as Morning View or ACLOTM. Light Grenades was a disappointment for me. I waited for it to grow on me, and did a little, but never to the point where I loved it. That being said, Incubus is still one of my favorite bands.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.
  • I've kind of noticed this... people didn't really like ACLOTM (as much as it's loved now) when it came out, but when LG came out, ACLOTM was looked at, and a lot of people just loved it, which goes for me as well. I wonder if this'll be the same pattern as when the next album comes out.
If I could, think I would give in.
  • I think Mike is one of the best guitarists out there. Have you seen the Live at Red Rocks DVD. Watch Sick Sad Little World, the solo, and wow, that is some talent. Love how they try to grow as musicians. Not many bands do that. Great band. I expect somethiing special on the next album.
  • No, I definitely agree... when I saw them in 04, I loved the extended shit they did, they did a lot of experimenting with songs and just looked like they were having fun... when I saw SSLW then, it was fucking sick... however, this LG tour has made SSLW even better... I mean, some versions got up to like 14 minutes long! Oh, and I thought the LG stuff sounded a lot better live..

One more thing, ya'll hear the Redefine (acousta-remix) from this LG tour? It sounds so awesome.
If I could, think I would give in.
  • This is one of the very few bands in which I love one song by them and hate everything else. Dig is one of my favorite tunes of the last few years.

  • I saw sick sad little world this year in dallas, it was about 11 minutes long. They really do put on a great show. Brandon Boyd has really come along way. I think the inclusion of Ben Kenney has helped them have a little more fun. I noticed it on this past tour. This band is really unique. Aqueous Transmission.... wow, beautiful song. I think Brandon is a very good songwriter. I love this lyric from glass off of their first album science...

    If I had a dime,
For everytime you walked I way,
I could afford, to not give a shit,
and, buy a drink and drown my day...

Make me think of a recen relationship. I will try to post a video from youtube of sick sad little world. I think some people will be impressed if they see it. Glad to see that there is some love for this band out there.
  • Yeah, for 17-19 years old... SCIENCE is fucking phenomenal, musically (with the jazz influence, especially towards the end of the album) and lyrically (it's really weird, but the lyrics are extremely well written).

    And Glass is amazing.

I still haven't seen Aqueous live... I saw them on their "small theatre" tour in early 07... so, it was amazing to see them at one of my favorite clubs (9:30 Club) twice.
If I could, think I would give in.
  • Just how good is Mike?? Well, this clip shows you just how freaking talented this guy is. Here is the extended jam of sick sad little world that I was talking about. For anyone who knows how to play guitar, from 5 minitues on, this is just ridiculous. At the 7 minute mark, it just gets impressive. Also, this clip lets you know just what type of a live band they are, amazing. What does everyone else think?

I love that DVD. It absolutely blew me away when I first watched it. Unfortunately Incubus weren't even half as good as that when I saw them at Birmingham last year. Didn't move or speak to the crowd and only played for JUST an hour and a half. I hate to say it but Aqueous Transmission was extremely boring as a closing song too. I understand Mike was still recovering from his hand injury but I would have been quite happy for the show to have been postponed for longer in order to get a better performance.
  • My favorite band.

Album rankings (including Enjoy Incubus EP):

  • I think his hand was killing him around that time. They need to close with pardon me... that song is killer.
  • The Warmth live is fucking killer... Ben Kenney tearing that distorted bass at the end is just too good.
If I could, think I would give in.
  • I like Incubus alot but I think I'm the first to say that SCIENCE wasn't anything special. It sounds like kiddy anger music to me. There are a few good songs. Make Yourself is my fav.

'S.C.I.E.N.C.E.' is a fantastic album. The production of that is very good and the scope is superb for the time - and still for today.

'Make Yourself' and 'Morning View' are both good albums, but the two since have been so poor.

Like so many other bands...their best days are long behind them.

I've seen them three times as well (2002, 2004 and 2005) and they've got worse with each show.

They were good at Reading 2002, but they've played less and less of the classic material and way too much of the boring new stuff.

'S.C.I.E.N.C.E.' is light years away from the rest. It's brilliant...the only classic album they've done. (No shame in having just one of course!)
